The whole world has been a target of terrorist attacks with the number of terrorist organizations on the rise in many countries. This has made terrorist groups an attractive issue for media coverage worldwide.
Most local and international media outlets ban any content featuring terrorist organizations to prevent any propaganda.
However, some media outlets, which look for scoops, commit a crime of broadcasting such propaganda.
France 24’s Wassim Nasr made a fatal media mistake when he hosted Abu Obeida Youssef Al-Aanabi, one of the top figures in al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The interview contradicted the French press institutions which ban pictures and videos featuring any terrorist acts following the Nice 2016 attack.
Commenting on the issue, Dr. Mohamed Fathi Younis, a journalism professor at the Faculty of Arts, Mansoura University, said that the hosting of terrorists is rather risky, citing other media examples. “Yousri Fouda hosted al-Qaeda leader Yousri bin Shibah, and Al-Jazeera’s anchor Ahmed Mansour hosted leaders of Al-Nusra Front as well as a sacked Syrian pilot. Egyptian director Essam Daraz met with Osama bin Laden,” Younis told THE REFERENCE.
“Unfortunately, these interviews included a series of problematic issues. As for Al-Jazeera channel, apparently these interviews were part of a bigger scheme related to Qatar’s alliances with some extremist groups. For instance, Mansour’s interview with the Syrian prisoner was unprofessional and inappropriate as he interviewed a suspended military man. This is not media, but rather a cheap propaganda,” Younis said.
The professor noted that the hosting of terrorists as men of resistance is a crime. “The answers of these terrorists during the interviews may carry codes for some terrorist operations. Therefore, the interviews should be edited before being broadcast,” he said.
“Many TV channels ban such interviews. For instance, the US Alhurra channel bans Hezbollah officials. It was a mess when one of its correspondents broadcast a conference of Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah. These TV channels ban such interviews to prevent any propaganda,” Younis added.
