India and the Philippines said they would cooperate in fighting terrorism and preventing terrorist groups from expanding their presence.
The two countries warned against the dangers posed by terrorist organizations, denouncing all forms of terrorism.
On October 20, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind described his country and the Philippines as “victims” of terrorism.
He said the two countries are committed to work together to defeat all forms of terrorism.
Kovind said India had turned into a target for terrorist groups decades ago.
He added during a visit to Manila that India and Pakistan, two democracies that believe in the rule of law, could cooperate in achieving their national goals.
He said his country’s relations with the Philippines keep moving ahead thanks to visits to the Asian country by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He referred to a marked growth in political, defense and security cooperation between India and Pakistan.
Kovind added that the two states also cooperate in counterterrorism and investments.
The Indian president called for more cooperation between the two countries in the future.
Common suffering
Terrorism has been having a toll on stability in the two states. According to the Global Terrorism Index, India and Pakistan are among the world’s top ten states affected by terrorism. India came in position no. 7 in the index, whereas the Philippines came in position no. 10.
Around 372 terrorist attacks took place in India in the year of the study, leaving 384 people dead and 601 injured.
This number of attacks amounts to a 12% rise, compared with the attacks that took place in India in the previous year.
Similar terror map
India and the Philippines suffer almost the same level of internal political extremism, one mostly driven by communist parties.
The two countries are also at the receiving end of huge arms supplies that compound cultural and upbringing problems.
India and the Philippines are also fertile soils for terrorist groups. The Kashmir region, which is at the center of a dispute between India and Pakistan, is an environment magnetic to terrorist groups who claim to be defending the region’s Muslims.
The same conditions are present in the Philippines where there are secessionist demands in the southern part of the country.
